Guide to Installing a Keyless Door Lock

How many times have you locked yourself out of your house? Gone for a run or to walk the dog and misplaced the loose key that you put in your shoe? Forgotten to leave a key out for your mother-in-law who was supposed to water your indoor plants while you were out of town? Or even found yourself in a sticky situation with a disgruntled employee not returning the master key to the building? It has happened to us all. Not only is losing your keys an annoyance, it is a safety concern as well. A great solution to your lost-key dilemma is to replace your deadbolt with a keyless door lock.

With a keyless door lock, you can choose your own numerical code and change it at any time. You can also program unique codes for different visitors or employees and delete them when they're no longer of use.

At Qualified Hardware, we have a wide range of keyless door locks to choose from for your home or business. The locks are easily programmed via a keypad without removing the lock from the door and some of our locks can even be used with Microsoft Excel-based software for added convenience.

Step 1

You will need to begin by removing your existing deadbolt. Then set the new deadbolt to match the existing 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" "backset". These measurements are from the door edge to the center of the deadbolt hole. Then simply install it into the deadbolt hole. Be sure that the top is facing up and the bolt is fully retracted.

Step 2

Install the exterior keypad first and then secure it into place with the inside mounting plate. You will then need to connect the wires to the battery inside of the unit and tuck them out of the way before attaching the inside plate cover.

Step 3

Open the door and make sure that the deadbolt extends out and retracts easily. If the door catches or is difficult to open, you will need to disassemble the lock and repeat the steps above to make sure they were done correctly.

Step 4

Each lock will come with its own set of programming instructions. Many come preprogrammed with one or two unique user codes. To change these, follow the instructions in the manual. Don't lose the manual! You will need it if you ever need to change the user codes or reprogram the lock and codes.
