What is Intumescent Material?

Zero International extruded, surface-applied fire and smoke seals are engineered
for improved performance and shelf life. These self-extinguishing,
flame-retardant seals are formulated with a proprietary chemistry
using silicone and intumescent.

When high heat, such as fire or smoke is applied, the material expands to many times its' original volume to fill in the gaps around the door frame, "choking" the fire.
This process happens at a very high heat, allowing ample time for evacuation before this change occurs.
