More Info

Friction can many times be the cause of slow movement of a door. The operation of a standard butt knuckle hinge works with knuckles swiveling over ball bearings that are between the joints. This motion causes friction on the ball bearings because the weight and potential energy of the door are placed on the hinge. Friction causes great resistance  and lowers the efficiency of the hinges making more force necessary to open or close the door. This principle can be the limiting factor in calculating the maximum weight and size of your door, because the heavier the door is, the greater the decrease of efficiency. Pivot sets allow the weight of the door to be borne by the floor, and can therefore accommodate very heavy doors.
