More About Rockwood Manufacturing

Why use pivots to hang doors rather than hinges? Here are some of the reasons why pivots may just be the better option for you.

Hinges that are used to support a door are working against the natural forces of gravity. They are designed to keep the door hung slightly above the ground, thereby fighting the force of gravity which naturally pulls anything down. This phenomena often results in many problems with the door. The  weight of these doors pulls the hinges downward on an angle which will eventually cause the door and frame to warp or break. It can also result in the loosening of screws which will compromise the support the hinges provide. Therefore, the life of doors hung with hinges may not be as long as you would like and may need to be replaced after just a short period of use.

Conversely, pivots are designed to work along with gravity, which eliminates most of the issues that hinges create. With a pivot, the door is supported by the floor instead of by the frame. This automatically prevents the door from bending and warping, since it is standing in its natural position and there is no tension. It will also make the door easier to open and close and will, most likely, extend the life of your door.

Similarly, hinges create a lot of friction between the knuckles of the hinge and the ball bearings. This can result in great resistance when opening and closing the door. The more a door weighs the more friction there will be. However, when using pivots the weight of the door is borne by the floor, thereby greatly reducing the tension placed on the door and frame.

Pivots are definitely the solution for very heavy, and very large doors. Hinges are not designed to be able to bear the weight of these doors and will result in a lot of damage to both the door and the frame. A pivot, on the other hand is made to transfer the doors weight to the floor and can therefore support even very heavy doors without causing strain to the door.

Additionally, pivots can add to the aesthetics of the opening. A frame may not be necessary, and the pivots can be hidden in the floor and ceiling, giving you entrance a more modern look. Pivots will also work great with very large or heavy doors which enables you to choose the door that suits your taste most without worrying about its size.

Pivots come with many  different options to work with a large variety of doors. Qualified Hardware offers top pivots,  bottom pivots, and intermediate pivots in varying strengths, from a few top brands on the market. Choose from our extensive selection the pivot or pivot set that is right for your application.

Qualified Hardware also offers patch fittings which provide a sleek, modern look for hanging glass doors.
