Face the outside of the door to determine the hand. Here are some rules to follow:

The outside of an exterior door is the street or entrance side.
The outside of a room door is the hall side.
The outside of a single communicating door is the side from which the hinges are not visible when the door is closed.
The outside of a closet door is the room or hall side.

Doors equipped with exit devices swing out only, and therefore exit device handing is known as reverse bevel.

The door is Left Hand Reversed if:

• While you are standing outside of the room facing the door, the hinges are on your left side.

The door is Right Hand Reversed if:

• While you are standing outside of the room facing the door, the hinges are on your right side.

An exit device, also known as a panic bar is a fantastic locking mechanism approved by UL for panic. As soon as the bar is depressed, whether by pushing it with your hand or by leaning your body against it, the will be released and the door will swing open. Hex key is used as a standard means to lock down the device, keeping it unlatched.
